Spring cleaning usually fails for one reason: we try to do everything in a single exhausting weekend. A better plan splits the job into four small weekends, each with one clear goal, so you finish with energy left over.

This checklist works any time of year you want a deep clean, but it’s especially useful when the weather warms up and you want to open the windows. Do the steps in order and don’t worry about doing them perfectly.

🗓️ The 4-Weekend Plan at a Glance
| Weekend | Focus | Time needed |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Declutter and donate | 3 to 4 hours |
| 2 | Kitchen and bathrooms | 4 to 5 hours |
| 3 | Bedrooms, living areas and windows | 4 to 5 hours |
| 4 | Floors, entryway and finishing touches | 3 to 4 hours |
Times depend on your home’s size and how much you’ve already been keeping up, so use them as a guide. Spread each weekend over Saturday and Sunday if that’s easier.
📦 Weekend 1: Declutter First
Cleaning around clutter doubles the work, so start by clearing things out. Bring three boxes or bags: donate, trash and relocate.
- Work room by room, starting with surfaces and floors, then drawers and closets
- Toss expired products in the bathroom and the kitchen
- Donate clothes, books and decor you haven’t used in a year
- Drop the donation bag off the same day so it doesn’t sit by the door

🧽 Weekend 2: Kitchen and Bathrooms
Kitchen
Empty the fridge shelf by shelf, toss expired items and wipe everything down. Clean the oven (use its self-clean setting if it has one and follow the manual), the microwave, the range hood filter and the cabinet fronts. Wipe the inside of a few cabinets and check the pantry. The kitchen deep-clean checklist has every step.
Dishwasher and washing machine
Clean the dishwasher filter and run a cleaning cycle. Then clean the washing machine drum, gasket and detergent drawer with this washing machine guide.
Bathrooms
Scrub grout and the shower, descale the showerhead, wash the shower curtain or liner if it’s machine-washable, clean the exhaust fan cover and wipe the cabinet fronts. For the routine part, follow our 15-minute bathroom routine.

🛏️ Weekend 3: Bedrooms, Living Areas and Windows
- Start high: dust ceiling fans, light fixtures, vents and the tops of door frames before you touch the floor.
- Wash the bedding: sheets, duvet cover, pillow protectors and any washable blankets or curtains, following the care labels.
- Freshen the mattress: vacuum it, sprinkle a light layer of baking soda, wait about 30 minutes, then vacuum again. Rotate it if your manufacturer recommends that.
- Dust and wipe: shelves, picture frames, lamp shades, remotes and light switches.
- Clean the windows: wash the glass, the sills and the tracks. A small brush and a cloth work well in the tracks, and you can wipe the screens too.
- Rugs and upholstery: vacuum rugs and sofas, spot-treat stains according to the label.
Use a gentle homemade glass cleaner if you like: see our natural cleaning recipes for a safe vinegar cleaning solution and what not to mix.
🧹 Weekend 4: Floors, Entryway and Finishing Touches
- Wipe baseboards and door frames, then vacuum under and behind furniture
- Vacuum all floors, then mop the hard floors last
- Clean the entryway: shake out mats, wipe the door and organize shoes (see our entryway ideas)
- Unplug the fridge before vacuuming the coils at the back or underneath, if your model has them accessible
- Replace air filters and test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. Our home maintenance checklist has the full schedule
💡 Tips to Make Spring Cleaning Easier
- Set a timer for each task. It keeps you moving and stops one project eating the weekend.
- Gather supplies first. A caddy with a multi-surface cleaner, glass cleaner, microfiber cloths, a scrub brush and gloves saves trips.
- Open the windows. Fresh air makes the work more pleasant.
- Put on music. It helps.
- Keep it going. A short weekly routine means next spring’s clean will be much lighter. Try the weekly cleaning checklist or the cleaning checklist by room.
Safety reminder: never mix bleach with ammonia or vinegar, and ventilate the room when you use strong cleaners.
❓ Spring Cleaning FAQ
Where should I start with spring cleaning?
Start with decluttering, because clutter makes every other task slower. Then clean from the top of each room to the bottom and finish with the floors.
How long does spring cleaning take?
For an average home, plan on about 14 to 18 hours in total. Splitting it across four weekends keeps it manageable.
How often should I do a deep clean?
Many people deep clean once or twice a year. Some tasks, like cleaning the washing machine and the dishwasher filter, are better monthly or quarterly.
What is the best order to clean a room?
Declutter, dust from high to low, wipe surfaces, then vacuum and mop. The floor always comes last.
💡 Final Thoughts
You don’t need to give up an entire month to a clean home. Pick the weekend, set the timer and tackle one zone at a time. Save this pin so your checklist is ready when spring arrives.
